After Jelly Roll’s all-star headline set on Saturday, it’s safe to say Luke Combs had big shoes to fill as he closed out another spectacular Stagecoach 2025 weekend in California.
But of course, this is Luke Combs we’re talking about, and the North Carolina hitmaker showcased exactly why he remains one of modern country music’s most revered and respected figures through an explosive performance in the Indio desert.
This year’s Stagecoach mantra was seemingly “the more, the merrier”, with virtually every set seeing a dazzling array of surprises guests, creating a warm sense of camaraderie.
Thankfully, Luke Combs got the memo, treating the packed-out crowd to the live debut of his fiery Bailey Zimmerman collaboration, ‘Backup Plan’. The track feels as though it was designed to be performed live, with the raging electric guitars combining with Combs and Zimmerman’s motivational hook to produce a rousing earworm.
Bailey Zimmerman brought his endearing, boisterous energy to the stage, with his signature vibrato ringing out into the Indio night sky, while Luke Combs wrapped his spellbinding, gravelly voice around the galvanising chorus. It was a captivating vocal performance, but what was most charming about this link-up was the fact that both artists looked to be enjoying the collaborative set immensely. Combs confirmed it wasn't just for show, quipping at the end, “Damn, that was fun!”
Although there's no release date just yet, as he introduced the duet, Luke Combs revealed to the Stagecoach audience that “we're shooting the music video right now”. This hopefully implies ‘Backup Plan’ will be dropping in the coming weeks.
Bailey Zimmerman first teased ‘Backup Plan’ back in January, before we knew it was a blockbuster joint track with Luke Combs, with the duo unveiling their collaboration last week.
On any other day, this unexpected duet would have been enough to make this a momentous occasion – but this is Stagecoach, so Luke Combs had a few more tricks up his sleeve.
After duetting ‘The Anthem’ and ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ with US punk-rock band, Good Charlotte, Combs brought out country legend Garth Brooks for a Stagecoach-wide sing-a-long of the latter's iconic smash, ‘Friends in Low Places’. Elsewhere during the histrionic Sunday set, the ‘Hurricane’ crooner teamed up with the Backstreet Boys to deliver another crowd-pleasing anthem, ‘I Want it That Way’.
