Doechii is one of the biggest names in the music industry right now, and the star herself believes that her “literal existence as a queer Black woman” is contributing positively to the hip-hop genre.
The star has become just one of three Grammy award-winners for best rap album (following in the footsteps of visionaries Lauryn Hill and Cardi B) and has even joined the ranks of stars like Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande in being named Billboard’s Woman of the Year for 2025.
The queer “Anxiety” rapper has also used her platform to campaign for trans rights, having won the Outstanding Music Artist accolade at the GLAAD Media Awards this year.
In a new interview with Cosmopolitan, the “Denial Is A River” hitmaker was asked whether her relationship with her girlfriend has provided some creative inspiration for her work.
“All of my relationships inspire my music because they make up my life experience,” she began. “This is such a Leo thing to say, but my literal existence as a queer Black woman is a major contribution to the hip-hop genre.”
Doechii went on to explain that by speaking her truth through her music, she is shedding light on much-needed queer, Black perspectives in the industry.
“I’m speaking truthfully from a queer Black woman’s perspective, and being honest about my life through my lens is amazing,” she added. “That perspective is being highlighted, and we need queer perspectives.”
The star also re-addressed accusations that she lip-synced during her performance of “Catfish” and “Denial Is A River” at the Grammy’s this year. The Alligator Bites Never Heal album creator took to TikTok at the time to say conspiracy theorists “are stupid as hell”.
Doechii said she was “halfway joking” with her response. “Like, please, don’t play with me,” she told the outlet. “I don’t cheat. I don’t cut corners, and I take my performances really seriously. So I was clapping back a little bit.”
