CASPER, Wyo. – Kelly Walsh High School music students who will pursue music after high school were honored in the annual KWHS College Band Decision Day on Wednesday.
The event takes inspiration from the NCAA’s National Signing Day, and reinforces the belief that students who excel in music should be given the same attention and recognition as those who pursue athletics, according to KWHS Band Director Brent Rose.
“KW College Band Decision Day’s purpose is to generate this excitement for music students going to college to play in their school’s band program,” he said.

Also in attendance was University of Wyoming Associate Director of Bands and Director of UW’s Western Thunder Marching Band Dr. Joe Carver, who said the university took KW’s singing day idea to other areas of the state several years ago.
“Thank you for making such a big deal out of this event, and thank you for celebrating the fact that all of these musicians are choosing to go do something that they don’t have to do,” he said. “It takes extra work, it takes extra passion for what you do.”
“You’ve invested a ton of time and effort into learning how to make music and play your instrument, and man, it would be a shame to just stop that just because you walked across the high school graduation stage,” he continued, adding that many of the students going to college and university on music scholarships aren’t necessarily majoring in music.
“Never have I met somebody later in life that goes, ‘Oh, I used to play this instrument and I’m glad I quit.’ Usually it’s the opposite,” he said.
