Dr. Jason Sulliman will perform a composition by Dr. Traci Mendel, award-winning composer and composition teacher at TROY.
Dr. Jason Sulliman, Associate Professor of Trombone in the John M. Long School of Music, will perform at the 2025 International Women’s Brass Conference in Hartford, Connecticut.
The conference, hosted by the University of Hartford’s The Hartt School from May 19-24, features recitals, lectures competitions and masterclasses. Sulliman will perform a composition by Dr. Traci Mendel, award-winning composer and composition teacher at TROY.
Composed in 2018, “Nightcall” premiered at the University in the same year. Sulliman has performed the work at several institutions in the region and now is taking it to an international stage.
“It is a wonderful piece of art, and it deserves to be heard,” Dr. Sulliman said. “It allows the performer to experiment with sympathetic resonance of a trombone aimed into a piano and it creates this depth and expansiveness that really transports the listener.”
Dr. Mendel’s music has won numerous awards and has been performed all over the world. “Nightcall” has been an opportunity for the Dr. Mendel and Dr. Sulliman to collaborate.
“Sometimes I dream emptiness, no color, no light, no darkness, no audible sound – only the sensation of sound. Nightcall is an attempt to create this essence of sound,” Dr. Mendel said.
If you would like to listen to Dr. Traci Mendel, The John M. Long School of Music faculty hosts a “Meldelpalooza” every year and showcases several of her compositions. To learn more about the School of Music and other events that will be hosted, please click here.
