Madonna is channeling her mother after unveiling a dramatic new hair transformation.
The Queen of Pop traded her signature blonde locks for a darker style that payed homage to her late mother, Madonna Louise, who passed away when she was a child, sharing a series of photos on her Instagram Stories on Sunday (May 18) highlighting the change, per People.
In the first photo, Madonna stared off to the side as she showed off her new short brunette curls, though it’s unclear whether she made the full chop or if she chose a wig for the look. She continued modeling the ‚do in subsequent snaps, giving followers a closer look at the dark waves framing her face.
"I missed my Mother so I channeled her…….." she said in a message overlayed on the first photo.
Madonna was 5 years old when her mother died from breast cancer in 1963 when she was just 30 years old, People reports. In the recent documentary Becoming Madonna, the "Vogue" singer compared losing her mom to "a part of my heart [being] ripped out" and said she felt "emptiness" after her death.
"I was forced to grow up fast and understand my mother’s death, to understand the psychological, all things that were going on," she said. "It was too much for a child to think."
Madonna has faced more family tragedies in recent years. In February 2023, she mourned the death of her older brother Anthony Ciccone in a heartfelt message thanking him for the music, authors and philosophies he introduced her to when they were younger. Her younger brother, Christoper Ciccone, also passed away in October 2024, and she penned an emotional tribute to him as well, saying that he was "the closest human to me for so long."
