CLINTON – A new enrichment program is providing opportunities for creative youth in Huron County.
The Banding Together enrichment program will provide youth from grades 7-9 from across Huron County with opportunities to learn a variety of instruments over the course of six weeks. The intensive program will teach all young students how to play brass, woodwinds, violin, cello, percussion and more. The program runs Thursday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. from May 15 to June 19 in the Central Huron secondary school music room.
“We are excited to offer this program to young people because studying music instills discipline, creative thinking and collaboration in young people,” said co-ordinator Spencer tenHag. “It is important for youth to have these foundational skills because they apply to life. The experience students can gain through making music is valuable not just for life but also for employment.”
The cost for Banding Together is $60, and the program is led by Western University bachelor of music education student tenHag, Brock University bachelor of child and youth studies student Savannah Rutledge and Central Huron music teacher Aaron Neeb.
“It is important for young people to have creative outlets,” Rutledge said. “It is incredibly valuable for young people to cultivate meaningful relationships with each other prior to and during high school. Our hope is that we can help build these positive relationships through creating music.”
Students who wish to register for this program are encouraged to contact huronhonourband@gmail.com before May 15.
