“Steve’s Lava Chicken” is tasty as hell — and a charting song on the Hot 100.
Jack Black’s new track from A Minecraft Movie may only be 34-seconds long, but that didn’t stop the song from breaking into the Billboard Hot 100 after becoming a viral hit on TikTok this month. “Steve’s Lava Chicken” debuted at No. 78 on this week’s chart, which the publication has confirmed is a record for the shortest track to ever land on the chart.
The song only encompasses a few lyrics, which were written by Black and director Jared Hess, where his character sings about his admiration for chicken smothered in hot lava. “La-la-la-lava, ch-ch-ch-chicken / Steve’s Lava Chicken, yeah, it’s tasty as hell / Ooh, mamacita, now you’re ringin’ the bell / Crispy and juicy, now you’re havin’ a snack / Ooh, super spicy, it’s a lava attack,” he sings over a trendy, upbeat tempo.
This isn’t the first time the School of Rock star has charted on the Hot 100 from a meme-worthy song from a video game movie. Notably, his track “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros. Movie debuted at No. 56 in late April 2023, and it stayed on the chart for five weeks.
Before “Steve’s Lava Chicken” set the Hot 100 on fire, Kid Cudi previously held the record for the shortest track on the chart with his 2020 song “Beautiful Trip.”
A Minecraft Movie stars Black and Jason Momoa in the live action adaptation of the beloved Minecraft video game. The film has already grossed $815 million at the global box office and drew some controversy with fans excitedly acting out in movie theaters. Still, there’s no denying Minecraft’s success, which ultimately further reflects with “Steve’s Lava Chicken” hitting the charts.
