Music Legends and Lionettes: A Look at the BHS Drill Team Spring Showcase – Brownwood News

On Saturday, April 12, 2025, the Brownwood High School Lionettes Drill Team took the auditorium stage at the annual spring show. “Dancing is not just about putting on a field uniform and sparkling,” said Brownwood High School Drill Team Director Kacey Humphries. “There are so many different styles of dancing that we are unable to do on the football field. Spring show is our time to shine. The spring show provides an opportunity for students to do something different than a traditional field routine that they perform during the halftime show.”
The 2025 theme was “Music Legends and Lionettes.” Various Lionettes performed routines to popular classics like “Dance with Somebody,” by Whitney Houston, “4 Minutes,” by Madonna, “Just Dance,” by Lady Gaga, “Purple Rain,” by Prince, “Smooth Criminal,” by Michael Jackson, and more. Every routine provided opportunities for creative choreography and costumes. Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” allowed for a hip hop routine with black and white costumes, Rihanna’s “Please Don’t Stop the Music,” pom routine with red sequin dresses, and the lyrical’s “Purple Rain” lilac bodysuit skirts swirled around in time to the music. Intentional planning and attention were taken for each dance and participant. “For each of the songs, every Lionette who wanted to participate in that dance was required to learn the dance over a designated amount of time and then check off in front of a panel consisting of the Captain, Co-Captain, and me,” Humphries said. “Once dancers have been selected, they clean the dance and make adjustments as needed.”
The showcase not only highlighted the skills and creativity of the team, but also provided an opportunity for additional students to participate as inter-acts and emcees. Theatre students Deja Martin and Alden Cecil served as emcees, introducing each routine and captivating audience attention with games and humorous quips. Theatre Arts teacher Audrey McKillip and the theater tech class built sets and props. A ‘Guy Drill Team’ performed a jocular routine to a mashup of “Stayin’ Alive”/“Single Ladies”/“Backstreet’s Back.” The BHS drumline and percussion ensemble performed twice, with a drum cadence and a quintet ensemble where players used various drumheads in a choreographed musical composition. Logan Furry led a solo performance of “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osborne on the electric guitar, followed by a duet with Dylan Dossey on drums in an electrified, emotional rendition of “Careless Whisper” by George Michael. A group of Lionettes who had been invited to participate in the 2024 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade executed the routine from their New York City performance. These all compounded with the Lionettes’ engaging song themes, such as the fan-favorite, “Black Out,” with black lights and neon costumes, which made the showcase an evening to remember.
Humphries, who is the Science Department chair, Forensic Science and Physics teacher, and faculty sponsor for Key Club, as well as the Drill Team Director, utilized the skills of the current Lionettes to create the show. “Ella Locker choreographed most of the dances for the spring show this year,” Humphries said. “I want to thank Kamila Ramos for her willingness to help, even when an injury made it difficult for her to do so. Both of these individuals have worked so hard, both prevailing in the roles they held. They have a vision and strive hard to make those dreams and ideas come true. I am going to miss those Seniors who have helped me through this year and am looking forward to seeing what next year will bring for this team.”
As a first-year Drill team Director, I have learned a lot,” Humphries said. “I think that it will just get better and better from here.” Humphries left a note on the back of the playbill for her dancers, a good reminder for all: “We know that BHS is a brighter place because of each one of you! And remember… dance like no one is watching, take advantage of every moment, and always, and forever, shine!”
I enjoyed working with the officers who created and choreographed each of the dances,” Humphries said. “I really enjoy seeing those individuals tap into their creative side. They have a vision and strive hard to make those dreams and ideas come true.”
